Bangladesh Food Safety Foundation (BFSF) and the Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association (BSOA) came together to observe World Food Safety Day at the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh Auditorium in Dhaka. Even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic challenges, these organizations demonstrated resilience by utilizing physical platforms to fulfil their mission. This event aimed to raise awareness about food safety, emphasizing that it’s everyone’s responsibility.
On this occasion, a morning rally took place with participants wearing specially designed T-shirts and caps featuring the UN’s logo for World Food Safety Day. Hundreds of people enthusiastically joined the rally, and to make the event even more impactful, festoons and posters for the day were prominently displayed.
Mr. Mustak Hassan Md Iftekhar, Founding Chairman of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, explained the background of the UN General Assembly’s declaration of the Day in 2018 and its themes. Mr. Shaheen Khan, CEO of Meena Bazar, spoke about the importance of maintaining a safe food supply chain, emphasizing that punishing supermarkets for food contamination isn’t fair because they don’t produce the products. He suggested the government should establish a comprehensive monitoring system for the entire supply chain.
Mr. Anwar Faruque stressed the need for proper supply chain monitoring, without which efforts like mobile courts wouldn’t be effective. Mr. Niaz Rahim, President of BSOA, suggested that the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority should define its roles to help food control agencies and encourage businesses to keep food safe. He chaired the event, with Mr. Anwar Faruque, former Secretary, the Ministry of Agriculture, as the Chief Guest.
This event brought together various stakeholders, including food businesses, experts, academics, consumers, and food control agencies, to work together for safer food.
